Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment

Hobart, Tas

Demolition of the existing Block B at the Royal Hobart Hospital involved substantial technical, physical and logistical challenges that had to be overcome for successful delivery. This included numerous physical connections, access ways and bridges between Building B and adjacent areas. All adjacent existing structures, including Heritage buildings, had to be protected during the demolition works. The demolition was part of the Royal Hobart Hospital Redevelopment Project and was required to allow replacement with a new 10 storey building. The demolition work was completed within a live hospital environment. Block B was structurally connected to three other buildings on the site requiring the team to investigate and physically disconnect the structure from the remaining parts whilst minimising disturbance and disruption to the daily operation of the hospital. Aldanmark won the Australian Engineering Excellence Award Tasmania in the category of Buildings and Structures for our methodical approach on the Royal Hobart Hospital demolition respectively.
